Blue Iris Integration

Plate Recognizer is pre-integrated with Blue Iris!  Basically, upon motion/vehicle detection, Blue Iris will send the image to our Snapshot Cloud for ALPR analysis.  The results are shown in our Plate Rec Dashboard or ParkPow, or sent to your internal system via Webhooks.

Activate Plate Recognizer in Blue Iris

Step 1. Sign up on Plate Recognizer.

Step 2. You will be given a Plate Recognizer API Cloud Token in

Please note that the Free Trial API Cloud Plan has a 1 lookup per second limit. If you send more than 1 lookup per second, the other image(s) within that second will be ignored by our Snapshot API Cloud.

Step 3. In Blue Iris, select the camera you want for ALPR. Then select Trigger Tab.

In the Trigger Tab, make sure to select Store alert images as hi-res files.  Make sure that the filesize is under 3 MB.  


Step 4. Check Plate Recognizer for ALPR.  Then click OK.

Step 5.  In the Blue Iris Main Page, click on the Settings icon in upper left corner.


Step 6.  Select the AI tab.  

Select Enabled under Plate Recognizer and then enter your Plate Recognizer Cloud API Token.

Click OK when done.

Configure Blue Iris Motion Detection for ALPR

Blue Iris has many features and capabilities to set up motion detection for LPR.  We recommend you watch this helpful video from Cajoling Technologies on Blue Iris Motion Detection.

Motion Sensor: You can set the minimim object size (# pixels) to reflect a vehicle image in your camera.

Make sure the default option (Highlight: Do not highlight the motion) is selected. This way, Blue Iris will not include a rectangle in the image it sends to Plate Recognizer.

Minimum Duration (Make Time): This should be set to 0.1 second, which means that the car will need to be there for 0.1 second before it triggers.

Setting the motion detection triggers correctly is important–otherwise, you will incur unnecessary lookups on your Plate Recognizer Snapshot account.

Object Detection: In the Motion Sensor page (screenshot above), click on Edit in Object Detection.

Here, you can indicate that the object must travel for a specified number of pixels (e.g. 100).

You can also have Blue Iris send an image to Plate Recognizer when the object crosses zones:

  • A Object must only have entered zone A
  • AB Object must have entered both zones A and B, overlapping or not
  • A>B Object must start in zone A, traveling to zone B
  • A-B Object must travel between zones A and B in either direction
  • AB>C Object must travel from zone A and B to zone C

Zones: You can create and edit zones. Just click and drag to set areas of the image.


You can specify multiple zones. Zones may or may not overlap. In the screenshot below,

  • Zone A is the full yellow hatch marking.
  • Zone B covers the staircase
  • Zone H (Hot Zone) is shown with the red hatch marking. Zone H is for special applications and should not be generally used.

To access the Dashboard, just sign in to your Account page:
